|The Majestic Theatre: A Beaux-Arts Beauty
Just sitting in the audience of the newly-restored Cutler Majestic Theatre is an event. Built in 1903 as an opera house, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece designed by John Galen Howard is listed on both the state and national registers of historic buildings. The acoustics of the Majestic are as legendary as its unobstructed sight lines and sumptuous architectural detail. William deLeftwich Dodge, who also created the murals in the Library of Congress, painted the lunettes in the lobby. Howard's revolutionary use of electric lightmore than 5,000 light bulbs traced the arches and design elementsattracted admirers and imitators throughout the globe.
