|Opera Boston is a unique opera company producing staged opera and special events in Boston. The company presents new productions of innovative repertoire and rarely-heard works, along with groundbreaking opera education and outreach programs. Opera Boston productions have earned "Best of Boston" honors from the Boston Globe every year for the last eight years.
Opera Boston makes opera enjoyable, accessible, and rewarding for its wide and diverse audience. The company aims to challenge and entertain every audience member, from the opera fan who travels the world to hear rarely-performed works, to the first-time operagoer. Before every performance, ticket holders are invited to a brief presentation by musicologist David Collins that will enhance their appreciation of the production.
Opera Boston is committed to providing opera education to children in schools and after-school programs throughout Greater Boston. Because opera draws on both the performing and visual arts, the company believes that opera education can help create well-rounded students by offering many options for self-expression. Last year, the company launched the Opera Shop, an opera education program that provides an opportunity for hundreds of children to learn about opera by attending performances and participating in workshops.
In one of the biggest undertakings in its history, in June 2003, the company produced Opera Unlimited, a widely acclaimed one-week festival of contemporary opera in collaboration with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. In July 2003, Opera Boston presented three free performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific on the U.S.S. Cassin Young for a total of 22,000 audience members.
